NIPTtest - NIFTY

Frequently asked questions

Questions and Answers - NIFTY Test
Do you have to have an ultrasound before NIPT?
It is not a requirement, but we strongly recommend having an early ultrasound in conjunction with NIPT. If you are expecting twins, the ultrasound is extra important, as we need that information to perform an accurate analysis.
Where is the sample collection performed?
We offer convenient and flexible sample collection where we come to your home! Our licensed nurses perform the sample collection in a location where you feel safe – in your home or at another location of your choice in Stockholm and Gothenburg. You do not pay anything in advance; payment is made at the time of sample collection. Would you prefer to visit a clinic? Contact us, and we will help you find a solution that suits you!
What is invasive sampling?
Invasive sampling involves taking a sample from the fetus by inserting a needle into the uterus, either through the amniotic fluid (amniocentesis) or the placenta (chorionic villus sampling). This is done to obtain a clear picture of any chromosomal abnormalities. The downside is that there is a small risk of miscarriage, which is why many prefer NIPT, which is completely risk-free. NIPT analyzes fetal DNA through a regular blood test from you, so no needle in the abdomen is required!
What is a fetal test?
A fetal test is an examination in which we analyze the fetal DNA to detect any chromosomal abnormalities or genetic conditions. With modern methods such as NIPT, like Nifty and Nifty Pro, we can perform it using a simple blood test from you – completely without the risk of miscarriage!
Is invasive fetal testing recommended?
Invasive fetal testing, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, is recommended if there is an increased risk for chromosomal abnormalities that cannot be confirmed through NIPT. This test provides a definitive answer, but it comes with a small risk of miscarriage. Therefore, it is common to first perform NIPT or KUB and only proceed with invasive sampling if it is truly necessary.
What is a KUB test?
KUB stands for Combined Ultrasound and Biochemistry. It is a test used to estimate the probability of chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome. However, NIPT has an important advantage: it provides a much more accurate result since we analyze the fetal DNA directly from your blood sample.
Should you have a KUB test after NIPT?
No, if you have already taken an NIPT test, you do not need to have a KUB test afterwards. NIPT provides a more accurate answer since it analyzes the fetal DNA directly from your blood sample, while KUB only provides a probability. However, NIPT does not replace ultrasound.
Do I need to prepare in any special way before the NIPT test?
The great thing about NIPT is that it does not require any special preparations. It is just a regular blood test, so you can continue your usual routine beforehand. We'll take care of the rest.
When can you take NIPT?
NIPT can be performed from gestational week 10+0. Before that, the blood sample cannot be analyzed. If you have a long menstrual cycle or do not remember the date of your last period, we recommend that you book NIFTY around gestational week 11 to avoid rescheduling and extra costs.
Where do you operate?
Our services are available in Stockholm and Gothenburg, which means that we come directly to your home for sample collection – safely, easily, and conveniently.
Can NIPT be performed during twin pregnancies?
Yes, NIPT can be performed during twin pregnancies. The test can assess the risk for the most common chromosomal abnormalities, such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), and trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome) for both fetuses. However, it cannot provide individual results for each fetus regarding other genetic abnormalities or microdeletions.
Can you determine the gender with NIPT?
Yes, NIPT can also be used to determine the fetus's gender if desired. This is done by analyzing the presence of Y chromosomes in the mother's blood. Please note that this is optional and based on your preferences.
Who cannot take Nifty?
There are certain groups for whom Nifty is not recommended. Individuals who have recently undergone a blood transfusion, organ transplantation, immunotherapy, or stem cell therapy should avoid the test, as the results may be affected. Pregnant individuals with chromosomal polyploidy, mosaicism, or specific genetic conditions such as uniparental disomy may also affect the test's reliability. Additionally, the test is not recommended if you are earlier than gestational week 10, or if you have recently had a miscarriage within the past 8 weeks.
Do you offer installment payments?
Yes, we offer installment payment options via Klarna. You can easily choose installment payments as a payment option at the time of sample collection. This gives you the flexibility to divide the cost in a way that suits you best. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions regarding payment options.
Do you send the blood sample with a courier?
Yes, we send the blood sample by express courier as soon as the sample collection is complete. Usually, it arrives at our laboratory in Denmark within 24 to 48 hours, ensuring quick handling and analysis.
What happens if the blood sample does not arrive in time?
The blood sample is analyzable for up to five days after collection. If, in the unlikely event, it does not arrive in time and becomes unusable, we will cover the cost of a new blood sample and test entirely free of charge.
When do I receive my NIPT results?
The analysis usually takes between 5 and 8 business days, depending on several factors. We always strive to deliver the results as quickly as possible, but to ensure the highest accuracy, we cannot expedite the analysis process.
What happens if a technical error occurs in the laboratory?
Technical errors in the laboratory are uncommon, but if they occur, we will cover the cost of a new blood sample and test at no cost to you. Our goal is to ensure as smooth and secure a process as possible for all our customers.
